Classic Wool Work Socks for Ken

a pair of knit socks next to a pair of Ken's feet

Pattern Details

This is a pattern for classic wool work socks designed to fit Ken and similar 11.5” fashion dolls. There is no heel shaping involved, so you can easily share the socks between dolls with slightly different feet.

These socks are worked in the round from the toe up, using the “magic cast-on” method (see below) to create a seamless toe with a nicely rounded shape.

Pattern Instructions

Brim

Using size 1 (2.25mm) DPNs, cast on 34 stitches. Join in the round, ensuring that the stitches remain untwisted. Work 4 rows of k1, p1 rib stitch as follows:

Round 1: *k1, p1.

Round 2: *k1, p1.

Round 3: *k1, p1.

Round 4: *k1, p1.

Body

Rounds 5-19: *k.

Decrease Rounds

Round 20: *ktog.

Round 21: *k.

Round 22: k1, *ktog.

You should have 9 stitches left on the needles. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail of the yarn onto a yarn needle and slip the remaining 9 stitches purlwise through the needle. Pull the ring of remaining stitches gently and firmly closed, and stitch it securely in place to close the top of the hat. Weave in ends.

To add a pompom:

To make a pompom, begin by wrapping a bit of yarn around two fingertips held together. Keep wrapping until the bundle is about 1cm thick. Cut the yarn and wrap the tail around the center of the bundle, tying it tightly in place. It should look like a number 8 tied around the middle.

Snip through the loops at each end of the ‘8’ with scissors and fluff out all the strands, trimming the ends into a round ball. Lightly roll the pompom between your palms and use your fingers to fray the ends of the yarn a bit to help blend everything together.

Once you are happy with how it looks, use a sharp sewing needle and with matching yarn or sewing thread, sew through the core of the pompom several times and then stitch it to the crown of your hat.
